Chapter Eight

“You’re awfully quiet tonight. Is everything okay?”

Josh looked up, startled. He’d been lost in his thoughts—thoughts about what happened earlier that day with Sam. Several times during dinner he’d almost said something, almost blurted out what happened, and how strange it had made him feel, but something had stayed his tongue.

Michael and he were so new. Too new for him to muddy the waters already with his own confusion about whatever the hell had passed between him and his boss while he was naked and cuffed to a restraint wall.

It wasn’t that he was attracted to Sam. No. That was a lie. He was attracted to Sam.

Or he had been. Sam, like Michael, understood the deep-seated need of someone like Josh to submit and wasn’t afraid to take what he wanted. But what happened that morning hadn’t felt right. Sam tricked him. Took advantage of the situation. Not only that, Sam was his boss. Plus, he was nearly twenty years older than Josh. But most importantly, he wasn’t Michael.

Where Sam tapped into the generic longings that were a part of Josh’s sexual hardwiring, Michael was so much more than that. They connected on so many levels. In fact, Michael had joked it was as if they’d signed up for one of those cornball online dating services and been matched along thirty-seven dimensions of compatibility, or whatever the criteria was for a match made in heaven. Josh joked back he doubted gay men into BDSM had too much success finding true love on those sites.

Still, he understood perfectly what Michael meant. They had made love while all he’d shared with Sam were structured scenes—first the audition and then the restraint wall. They were scheduled, artificial scenarios.

Yes, his body responded, but then, his body always responded to the accoutrements of BDSM. It was one of the reasons Sam hired him, or so he said. Certainly it was more satisfying for the clients to use a sub who appeared turned-on by what they were doing, even if all they got was his body.

He couldn’t tell Michael what happened. He was embarrassed to admit he’d been so easily manipulated. Michael would surely think less of him.

Instead he shook his head. “Nothing’s the matter,” he lied. “I missed you since the second you dropped me off yesterday evening. I’m so glad you had time to see me tonight.”
